People who opposed the very idea of solidarity
demand it when it comes their time to feel
the oppressor's boot on their own neck.
They mocked the distant victims,
blamed the victims for their own suffering,
but when the boot presses their neck
to the soil red from the blood gushing
from their own broken nose, they use
their ragged voice to scream for help
from people near and far, from those
standing near, from those hiding behind
their screens, they scream for help
from the world, universe, gods,
and existence itself, even from the one
whose boot rests on their neck.
They have become believers in universal
solidarity, believers in human beings helping
each other for the sake of their shared humanity.
And they are right, they are right
and everybody should rush to help
them and get that boot off their neck.
