for a Portuguese naval ship to
arrive and start the rescue.
Of the 1052 people
onboard, 194 survive;
858 die.
650 of those
who perished were
Italian prisoners of war.
Robert Gysae, the commander
of U-177, would die in Wilhelmshaven
on April 26th 1989,
aged 78.
