A brighter morning
in the desolate midwinter,
breaks in the cloud-cover,
colours beyond black,
gray and white scattered
in the landscape
catching the eye,
the evergreens recovered
their green in dark hues,
a tint of pastel red
on the edges of clouds,
the snowfields
edging towards blue -
and then the clouds
close the gaps
and all is black, gray
and white, the evergreens
rising black from white
snow against gray
overcast sky.
