RIMAS AL-AMOURI(2011-2025) AND AYMAN AL-HAMOUNI(2012-2025)

On Friday, in Jenin, Israel
shot Rimas, 13,
in abdomen, killing her.

On Friday, in Hebron, Israel
shot Ayman, 12,
in chest, killing him.

Did you see mourning
headlines in the Occident
about them?

Did you see angry politicians
commenting, pundits in sorrow
writing columns,

talking heads
on screens talking
about them

in grief and anger?
No, you didn't,
because theirs

were lives
that didn't matter
to the racist 'West',

the 'West' that shrugs
when killing bullets
hit frail bodies

ending lives,
ending lives
just beginning.

GAZE OUTSIDE, BUT LISTEN

Gaze outside,
gray-white clouds
and gray-white land
and pallid, faded light,
but from the sound
of water dripping
from the eaves
you would think
the winter reigns,
yet from that sound
that evokes spring
and autumn rains,
flooding memories,
you know the winter
is ending, casting
its coat of snow aside,
long weeks for the land
to shiver bare when
the true spring
rains come.

NO WINTER MORNING SO COLD

There's no winter morning so cold
that wouldn't be turned by her
into a forge with a blazing furnace
where sweating in lust I hammer
my desire into poems. If they break
when wielded, it's not the heat
of the furnace or the desire
that was lacking, but the skill
of the one wielding the hammer.

UNTIL THE STARS COME TO EARTH

O let me guide myself
in my erect desire
and find my relief
between your open
thighs, o let me be
a part of you, flesh
in your flesh, a knot
unbroken, until joint
pleasure in its climax
brings the stars to earth
and flesh and the lusting
mind have their glimpse
of wide eternity.

EACH MORNING NOW

Awakening to a dawned day,
a fading dream slipping
past remembrance, he
still knows the dream being
erect and wishes hard
she would be there to grab
the dream and his member,
holding both in her touch,
not letting former go
and bringing latter to its
relief the dream had eluded
when she slipped away
from his dreaming mind's
yearning embrace.

the fading memory of dreamed

jealous of the part of him that

ON THESE COLD DAYS STAY SAFE

Keep safe from the biting winds,
the cold pouring from the north.
The spring awaits like a frog under
the frozen layer of earth and time,
ready to emerge when winter's white
coat is thrown aside, to lay a carpet
of green grass under your fee and
sprout wildflowers in bloom around,
to a paint an azure dome over your
head and cast the golden sphere
of celestial fire in those deep
blue depths to warm you, to
bring an orchestra of songbirds
to perch on greening boughs and
sing their tunes of spring for you.
Keep safe from the biting winds,
the cold pouring from the north,
the winter's white will melt away
and spring will grant its
treasured days for you.

One rises for the occasion
and the lens, the spirit

for pleasure given is

gifted for kind and
desired eyes, a circle
where joy and lust
beget each one

FOR BIRTHDAYS

Birthdays roll like billows from the deep
main of time to our shores. They stand
still firm, uneroded, the great wave
still long in coming that sinks the isles
of our existence, makes all our years
a lost Atlantis, dimly perceived under
the waves by those who then remain,
who remember or have been told
of our glone glory, these bright years
that tower in the air that will
rest in the deeper blue. But that
is for the future beyond plentiful
years, and the slow wave breaks
on our shores, leaves its gifts,
and to the horizon it lies
serene and still, the ocean
of time and life, for us.

White morning, climbing
towards the low, gray hills
of the pale mid-day,

descent to the waiting
dells of the black night

coming, where stars sleep
unblinking in the dark
spinned from the white

expanse of snow

of the fire that the Sun

kindles in the landscape
and the mind, Helios
caged by the winter

whiteness that bites
deep into the bone
marrow of the mind.

They can't see all the imposed
tragedies and injustices of the world,
five ongoing genocides, five military

Turkestan, Kashmir, Kinshasa's Congo,
Palestine, Sudan, Tibet, Western Sahara,
West Papua all mere air to them, or a chance
to profit from the occupations, genocides,
segregation. The 'West' can see only people
they believe to be their clones and doppelgängers
in pink pigment and Indo-European tongue,
they can only see Ukraine while stepping
over fields of murdered people.

ON A COLD FEBRUARY MORNING

A colder morning, ten degrees
below zero. Scattered clouds,
pale blue sky, orange hue in horizon
the herald of the coming bright
sunlight. Light and cold air,
winter's conjoined twins,
always together until spring
comes shivering in the morning
frost, before abundant sun
melts the glimmering white.
Two months to that, now
the white snow reigns and will shine
in the cold hours of the lengthening
day, when the winter in its middle-age
has cast away its gray cloak, taking
on a golden robe of solar weave.
So cold hours, bright hours,
air will be deep blue; gazing
up you could think it's the azure
sky of early summer days, if not
for the vapour of your breathing
telling it's the cold, deep sky
at the height of winter months,
and the spring of warm rays
and long rains waiting
on the arms of April.

After translating five poems
by Charles Simic and writing
four, I pull back the curtains
and no Sun but overcast sky
of clouds the colour of snow
spreading undulating across
the valley to the ridge, you
could paint the landscape
with black, gray and white
alone. I go to the kitchen,
warm a pizza and a pie,
eat them watching videos
from Wafa News Agency,
start posting in the gray, pale
light of the day stretching
like the fields of snow
towards the coming dusk,
the starless night.

Slept far too much, and now, in this
morning behind still closed curtains
- there is time to open them when
the need to write has passed, like
sexual passion after fullfillment -
back in the routine of writing own
poems, diatribes against colonists,
an ode to a hominid jaw, and
translating, while an effervescent
vitamin tablet is turning water deep
yellow in the tall beer glass my parents
bought thirty years or more years ago,
and down with the sun-coloured liquid
go the medicine pills before taking
the next poem to translate from Charles
Simic, who has briefly sidelined everything
else, being such an easy one to mine for
brief feelings of joy, no need to go
through dictionaries, search if a word
had the same meaning for Donne
as it has for us in these latter days
when behind Schrödinger's lemon
coloured curtains the Sun might
shine to snowy fields or not.

PARANTHROPUS CAPENSIS

We presumed they were on their way out
by then, the cousins of our ancestors;
in our thoughts we had reduced their
genus to the fringes of the evolutionary
diorama by then, eating their tough
roots without a stone tool to be seen,
waiting for their last few hundred
thousand years to run out before
mineralizing into fossils. But now,
here we have capensis, late in the day,
resurrected into knowing from
a museum cabinet, no longer one
of our forefathers and foremothers,
but a sprig from that robust line
evolving towards something less
specialized, more like our ancestors
had been a million years earlier,
making it's way from a cul-de-sac
towards wide open evolutionary road
to future forms. It's like the nature
would have had second thoughts
about our father and mother Homo
erectus, seen something of what
we would become, and reached
for a Plan B. We won, we won
the crown, the thumb on
the trigger to bring a nuclear
Holocaust after all our other
holocausts, we won our shame
of the Sixth Mass Extinction,
the shame of all the extinct
brother and sister species
flickering out at our arrival
in the lands they inhabited,
and somewhere along the way
we perhaps cast a stone or,
if they lingered on the edges
of that diorama long enough,
a spear that killed the last
Paranthropus capensis
or some form born of it,
still hidden in rock
or a museum cabinet.

THE BEAST OF AUSTRALIA

In Australia the bald-headed Fascist
leading the opposition preaches hate
against the Aboriginals and Palestinians,
declares his adoration for Apartheid Israel,
standing before the Israeli flag he promises
to tear down the indigenous flags of the land,
to support genocide and ethnic cleansing,
and, perhaps, himself commit genocide
and ethnic cleansing. He is a colonist
standing on stolen and blood-soaked soil
who doesn't hide his sympathy and feelings
of solidarity towards other colonists
standing on stolen and blood-soaked soil.
No, he embraces it, he wallows in it.
Fifty years ago he would have said
the same things about Apartheid South
Africa and Rhodesia, felt the same
primal unity with the pink faces
lording over black faces, extinguishing
the flame burning in the oppressed' eyes.
And now he sees in Aboriginals Palestinians
and in Palestinians Aboriginals.
His is the hate and fear of the thief
against the rightful owner, fear
against what other indigenous struggles
will mean for the natives on whose necks
he tries to stand waving his Israeli flag,
the flag of all the colonists in the world.
In all his white colonist's privilege
he is afraid, terrified, a scared man
cowering in his own hate.

WHAT THE WESTERN EYES SEE IN THE HOLY LAND

The long dead from an another continent
are piled up high before the occupation forces'
bases, the illegal colonies. The occupied
natives don't see them, but the Westerners
don't see the occupied natives from them,
so high the piles of the long dead from
an another continent rise before
the eyes of the Westerners.

When the tanks and armoured personnel
carriers and armoured bulldozers go
to destroy homes and lives and refugee
camps and cities and towns and villages,
the long dead from an another continent
are tied into their sides, piled atop them,
and the Westerners' gaze is locked on
them, so they don't see the occupied
natives being killed, the torn bodies
of the natives, children, women, men,
the aged, being piled high among
the ruins of their land.

OBJECTS IN THE WINTER NIGHT

Evening turning night, a crescent Moon balancing on the roof
of a building's silhouette, white atop black in the midst of dark blue,
cosmic ocean falling down, touching the already freezing soil of Earth,
universe's primeval darkness embracing everything around you,
embracing you, one darkness from you to the stars emerging
beyond the Moon's white glare, and one careless quantum step
and you would walk the dead lunar seas ten glorious seconds,
final step sending you bouncing up into the exosphere before
your heart stops. Human bodies are not made for glorious desolation,
the silence that has reigned billions of years, deeper than this winter
night's that now bends around you, like space bending around the Moon.

PRACTICAL ISSUES IN LUSTFUL DREAMS

He drops his pants

and then he thinks
how unedifying
would it be to
pull them off

perhaps having

while his mistress
watches waiting,
and whether he
would stand
through it all,
tall and ready
for her gaze

afterwards.

If he couldn't invite

it would all be
just death in the news,
ink on paper,

words of the long
dead, words of the recently
departed, words after words,

those Phoenician inventions
running across screens, telling
of the funerals of martyrs,

burning villages, cities broken
and pulverized, videos of the mocking
faces and voices of feted war criminals,

it would all be just that,
a broken world and words
against the flood,

art racing the rising tide
of crimson waves from
a bleeding a world,

without his muse
sitting on his lap,
swaying on his lap,

bending over to pick
up his fallen pen,
bringing him up,

it would be just
a world of death
and words crumbling

under the hammer strikes
of falling bombs, without
his muse swaying on his lap.
