THE DALAL FAMILY MASSACRE ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29TH 2025

Ameen Abu Dalal and his family
survived 24 months and three weeks
of genocide, and Ameen worked
hard for The Sameer Project
at the Refaat Alareer Camp
helping others, helping to feed
the starving. And twice they
believed themselves saved
as ceasefires came, believed
themselves survivors, dreamed
of rebuilding their lives, dreamed
of the children growing up -
there was, again, a future.

And on Wednesday, as they slept,
Israel killed Ameen, killed his wife,
killed their children,
killed his brothers, killed their wifes,
killed their children.

Israel killed 18 people from the family.

Only survivors wife of one brother
and their child evacuated abroad
for medical aid. Everyone else
was killed by Israel. Everyone.

Boycott Israel to end the genocide,
boycott Israel to end the occupation,
boycott Israel to end Apartheid,
boycott Israel to free Palestine,
boycott Israel to end Israel.

TOO BRITTLE?

October over,
and what I have done?
I have written
and what else?

Shouldn't words
be more than words
and not stay on pages
as crude ornaments

to merely drive away
the white wastes
that terrify the mind?
Shouldn't words lead

to action, shouldn't
words be forged into swords?
But perhaps the metal
of the words is too brittle.

ISRAEL KILLS ITS WAY THROUGH CEASEFIRES IN GAZA AND LEBANON

Israel has killed four people in Gaza
today and is bombing Lebanon,
killing two so far on Friday,

yet these attacks don't break the ceasefire,
according to the United States
and the European Union;

according to the European Union,
they only "test" it, at most "endanger" it,
but can never break the ceasefire

because Israel can never break a ceasefire,
it's like breaking the Second Law of Thermodynamics
according to the European Union,

impossible because Israel
"is Europe's greatest achievement
since the Second World War"

according to Ursula von der Leyen,
and the United States says
that thousands of Israeli attacks

are just "limited", everyone targeted
is Hamas or Hezbollah, and that ceasefire
actually means Israel has a right to kill

as long as it says it targets
Hamas or Hezbollah. Ceasefire,
United States says, can only end

when Israel says the ceasefire
is over, no matter how many are killed
as long as they are not Israeli Jews.

THEY TELL NOTHING SHOULD BE DONE TO STOP THE GENOCIDE UNTIL THE WORLD COURT RULING

People and organizations
that have dedicated their existence
to asking why the Holocaust
was allowed to happen

now tell us that nothing should be done
to stop the genocide of occupied Palestinians
by Apartheid Israel's regime
until the World Court rules in 2028

whether the slaughter is officially a genocide
or not, and until then, there should be no
sanctions, no punishment for Israel,
nothing should be done to stop the slaughter.

And what, in 2028,
will these people and organizations say?
We know: They will say the ruling
is biased and 'antisemitic',

and anyway, too late
to do anything, so nothing should be done
except forget and forgive Israel -
and remember the lessons of the Holocaust...

When they have forgotten -
or never learned -
the lesson of the Holocaust
that genocide is always wrong
and all must act to end it.

LOST AND NOT LOST

I get lost in enticing words,
following paths
they form for thoughts,
not lost as
not knowing the way back,
but lost as
each new sight appearing
lures one forward,
and days and years
slip past
until I will walk
under leafless branches,
among felled trunks
and tree stumps.

31.10.2025

ISRAEL CAN'T BREAK THE CEASEFIRE, NO MATTER HOW MANY PEOPLE IT KILLS - ACCORDING TO THE UNITED STATES

Since its cabinet accepted the ceasefire
(half a day after the ceasefire
was agreed to take effect,
with dozens of people killed in those hours)

Israel has killed 214 people,
almost half of them children,
in occupied Palestine's Gaza Strip.

This, according to the United States,
doesn't break the ceasefire.

Just like Israel killing almost 280 people
in Lebanon in around 4500 attacks
after the ceasefire took effect
doesn't break the ceasefire
according to the United States.

A FRAGMENT

The day that teased blue
grows dim; grey clouds
hiding depths briefly glimpsed
growing dark, engulfed
by the night rushing
from its subterranean lairs,
and stars shine bright
beyond the devoured clouds.

07.-29.10.2025

SCENES OF AUTUMN

The dark shapes
of birds darting
in the solitude
of the clouded sky
over the still and silent,
darkly unreflecting
waters of the lake,
vanishing.

The bared trees
shivering  in chill
gusts of wind
shaking drops of water
from branches
on their withered leaves fallen
on lichen and the dead grass
below, earthen colours
growing dark in the waning light.

NO MATTER HOW

No matter how
he tries to write
of other subjects now -

how the dark shapes
of the birds dart
in the solitude
of the clouded sky
over the still and silent
dark waters of the lake -

he can't but think
of her open thighs,
how her feet on his shoulders
he would merge
with her, that tormenting
bliss half-lived
is the crafting mind's solid
ground under all the daily
verse that is but flotsam
the rising tide brings,
the receding tide takes out -

the bare trees
shivering in the breeze,
dripping water from the branches
on the fallen leaves resting
on lichen and the dead grass -

and in his mind
he sees them among the leaves
entangled,
and the articulate protests
of the logical mind -
cold, wet, you both will get a flu
or pneumonia - fall
aside like the leaves;
all the changing seasons
have under them
the same solid ground of the mind
that lets imagination experience
what reality in autumn would restrict
to a rug beside a hot tilestove.

28.-29.10.2025

EVEN THE SHIVERING TREES

Even the shivering
trees
stripped
of their leaves
make him think
of her, how
he, like the chill
wind,
would bare
her to his touch,
cold fingers
warming
on her skin.

ON THIS AUTUMN DAY

It seems I can't stop
the coming of the words
on this autumn day,
nothing but words
and a short walk
in the entire day,

words like fallen leaves
on both sides of that half an hour,
nothing but words,
and how much do words
weight in the scales
against Maat's feather?

WHAT ONLY THE SPRING

In late autumn,
on the edge of winter,
the world grows desolate,
becomes thin, frayed,
a spoiled thing,

and then comes
the covering shroud
hiding what only
spring turning summer
will mend in light and life.

IN THE LATE OCTOBER

The tall evergreens
stand still and dark in the wan light,
and everywhere the dead grass
of summer around the brooding
trees carries a carpet of
fallen leaves, gazing
at them part of the mind
remembers the sound they made
rustling in the wind
of the season buried in them.
The summer dead at their feet,
the firs and pines, unmoving
and unmoved, brood on.

REFLECTED LIGHT

Days without writing
poems, and then
yesterday a day for words
of others, for dead voices
being given different garments
in my mind, like changing
clothes on paper dolls,
and today, feeling a bit rusty
letting own words come to knit
sentences into verse again.

Yet how much
here is reflected light
from yesterday?
how like the innocent
thief Moon is dressed
in the brilliant light of the Sun,
are the verses here
rags from the robes
those dead voices still hold,
stolen paper garments
given for myself to wear?

the innocent t-shirts,
they remind him
of everything underneath.

BACK FROM MY SHORT WALK

It's twenty-four to five
and I will be making coffee
black as the coming night,
and with a big mug in my hand
will sit down before
the computer to drag
the translation of Celandine
by Edward Thomas
over the finishing line
drawn by my mind;
on one side raw,
on the other good enough.

And later I will come back,
and see all the problems
I missed when, relieved,
I declared it to be good enough.
This is the way with things,
but it's the only way
to get things done,
even these little things, in life:
Accepting imperfection at first
and later polishing.

like the waning light
will be unremembered by the night.

A LATE OCTOBER DAY

It could be any
time of the day
between
the mid-morning
and the late afternoon,
the fall hours
the same gray moment,
sole change
in the landscape
strong gusts of wind
bending the trees
or
rain that comes or fades;
you divide
the day before
the rain and after
until a second rain shower
comes or not,
until
dim day become darker,
growing
into the short dusk
and the quickly
falling night.

WHAT LUST DOES

It has come to this:

Casually noticing
that the autumn wind

he gets a vision
of himself bending
her over his desk,

his hands
on her bare buttocks
as he guides
himself inside her.

TO FIND THE BRANCHES EMPTY, EXCEPT

Go south seventy kilometers
and the deciduous trees
have more of their withered
                                leaves,

two weeks worth,
perhaps,
               of leaves,
from gold
to green,

and come back
home
to find the branches
empty,

except
the still young oak
on the yard,
                     the one
you've watched
grow
         for fourty years,

holds fast its own
for them to fall
on late winter's snows.

ONLY DEAD GRASS

Morning turns into noon and finally
the mist embracing the undulating
hillsides of the little valley lifts,
dissolves,
                 yet in the revealed
distance the mind thinks the eyes
see rain on the hill entwined
by trees and houses,
                                   the one
you haven't walked for thirty-five
years or more, a kilometer away.

In the vast distance of years
and land only dead grass.

ON BOTH SIDES OF DREAM AND REALITY

Another morning awakening
from some dream slipping
fast beyond remembering,
yet he knows his muse
was part of it
and should be here
waiting to finish,
in whatever way would please
her, what her presence
had started in the dream,
easing what she had left hard
on both sides of the dividing
line of dream and reality,
line that she has again merged.

MY DESIRE MIGHT BE PATIENT

1
My love may be Platonic,
my desire might be patient,
but my lust is not -

what the mind solely enjoyes
the mind and flesh
coming together in lust

want to enjoy,
if ever briefly,
in corporeal unity.

2
The too patient mind
inside its ivory abode
can ever after remember

the entanglement
of limbs, the long-awaited
coming,

feasting solitary
on the remembered
sensations,

after together with the flesh
they have had their moment
of fulfilled lust.
