a mother beaten by occupiers
her bloody eye swollen shut
breastfeeds her baby who feeds
greedily as infants do
as the mother lays on the floor
aware of pain aware like a woman
beaten by foreign soldiers
in her own country is
as her baby clutches to her
like the people to their land
through all the decades of pain
