VENICE

I think I have translated a poem

feeling

     satisfied

for a job done

only to find out

I have translated a fragment

of a much longer poem

it works better

than a fragment of Sappho

on its own

has the fullness

of a poem

even when it's just

the torso of a marble

statue

     defaced.
