JUST BEFORE SUNRISE

On the Tuesday morning

when I should have been making

myself ready to leave

for a routine blood test

in the medical centre

I couldn't find my eye-glasses

and spend forty minutes

searching for them,

growing exasperated,

until finally I remembered,

long after I should have left,

and went to the living room

and found them atop

a drawer before the windows

where I had laid them down

three and a half hours earlier

when I took a photograph

of the landscape outside

at dawn, brightening

just before sunrise.
