I went to watch the Sun,
low above the treeline,
nestled among wispy clouds,
be partly hidden by the Moon,
remembering how thirty-six
years earlier partial eclipse
had silenced the birds
with little change in light,
but now there were no birds
to silence, only the steady,
distant hum of the traffic
in the already
dimming evening,
and I laid down on the terrace,
listening, as the Moon
and the evening
made the light wane,
and awoke
shivering in dark midnight
to the distant hum
of the unceasing traffic,
untouched by eclipse
or time.
