LAST CHARGE OF THE TENNYSON BRIGADE

Alfred, Lord Tennyson was a bard
of Imperalism, singing the praises
of the British Empire. Little
did he know that his seed would
fail with the Empire, that those
wars he praised would cut down
two 'spares' to his title.

PEACE IS "TOO COMPLICATED"

According to the supporters of Israel's regime
the Israeli occupation of Palestine is
"too complicated" for anything to
be done to end it - yet at the same
time not so complicated that
Israel shouldn't be helped
to keep the occupation going on.

GENOCIDAIRES SHELL DIALYSIS CENTRE IN EL-FASHER

RSF / Janjaweed genocidaires shelled
the only dialysis centre at the North Darfur
state, located in the besieged city of El-Fasher.

Deaths of hundreds of dialysis patients
have been confirmed during the war
as a result of end of treatment,

but thousands are suspected. Not
counted in the official death toll, even
when RSF / Janjaweed killed them

as surely as the people they threw
in a pit and shot after the
fall of Ardamata.

JUST DEATH

I'm on Instagram, and between photos
of people posting images of their pets,
or themselves on beaches, or great works
of art, astronomical wonders, is the breaking
news repeated by several news agencies:

Israel's occupation forces have bombed
the home of the Nasr family in the al-Maghazi
refugee camp in Israeli occupied Palestine's
Gaza Strip, killing five people.

No photos of pets for them, no photos
of family moments on beaches, no
artwork hanging on their walls,
no gazing up at the night sky,
naming the planets and the stars.

NORMALIZING GENOCIDE EVERYWHERE

Those who support Israel's genocide against the Palestinians
have dehumanized occupied Palestinians to the extend
that they don't comprehend that they are not 'just'
normalizing genocide against Palestinians,
they are normalizing genocide everywhere.

So very few things in this life
truly matter, tending to be those
that slip through our fingers

when we engage ourselves with
lesser things, noticing only later
the full scope of what we have lost.

A HOLLOW PLACE

This evening has but glimmer
of feeling in its deep light,
it's bright landscape in green.
it's almost cloudless pale
blue sky. Something has gone,
having left a hollow place
these sounds and colours,
these scents can't fill.

SOME STRANGE MELANCHOLY

Clear, warm evening. Birds
singing. Two, three

Some emptiness vaster
than the landscape
has taken hold of me,

and all of this has no effect
beyond some strange melancholy
that quiets my words.

YOU WILL BECOME A TRUSTEE

An artist is not free. They are always - almost
always, a prisoner of their society. Its mores,
its rules. Even if they rebel against those. their
opposition to them directs their rebellion and binds
them. An artist-dictator like the poet Mao Zedong is
as free as an artist can be in connection to the society
around them, but then they become a prisoner
of their own power, their own growing delusions.
Not that anyone else is free. Freedom is a great
illusion, at the best of time, and often a quite small
one. It barely covers the shackles one has on the feet,
or the collar around the neck. The demand for
artistic freedom still comes easily from the lips,
but the artist might as easily chant for Amida
Buddha. Dead words die in their own absurdity.
The society gives you a sheet and tells you
to sing, it puts a brush in your hand and tells you
what to paint, it gives you a pen and tells you
to write the Great [add name of country] Novel.
If you behave and do well, your daily rations
are increased. You will become a trustee.

THE GENOCIDE DENIERS

Many upporters of Apartheid Israel's regime
claim that the Palestinian death toll
in the last nine months, and during this
century, can't be true. Why?

Simply because they support Israel.
They couldn't support Israel if
they would accept the magnitude
of the slaughter, so they deny it.

in Finnish and 67 this month; 4 translated today
for a total of 61 translated this month of June.

SWITZERLAND - GERMANY 1-0, HALF THROUGH THE SECOND HALF OF THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

The old cat nods on my lap
as we watch Switzerland lead Germany
1-0 in the otherwise empty house.
The old running commentary missing,
I have trouble getting engaged
with the match. I drink the last coffee

give the old fellow a pat on the head,
asking forgiveness, set him aside,

FROM THE LISSADELL HOUSE

Binn Ghulbain ascends pale green
from the dark green land, turns
almost black on the rim of its
level top, shrouded by fog.
The scene more poetic
than these words
can contain.

But we can try,
we can talk of the history
embedded in the landscape, how
an ancient sea bottom was raised high
to the sky, still carrying with it the fossils of its
ancient, teeming life, embedded in its very being,
like this house its own relics that have become part of it.

I CAN'T MAKE IT TONIGHT

He had a deep yearning in his loins,
growing, took up a pen to write
it away, giving her shape to his
longing, throwing a blanket on
the dewy grass in the sweltering
pocket universe of his mind,
undressing her with his words,
gently guiding her down on her
knees with his sentences, writing
her waiting, opening to him for
him to quench his thirst; he wrote,
with rushed thrusts, of feeling her
around him, the soft skin of her hips
tender under his hands gripping
them, as he move to the tune of
the branches swaying in the wind,
in and out, slowly, until the release.
As his poem ended and he dropped
the pen, came the sound of a message
arriving from her in his phone:
I can't make it tonight, honey.

THEY TOO, KILL

It's not just the people who pull the trigger,
who launch the missile, drop the bomb,
or give the order, who kill.

The people who support the slaughter,
the people who deny the genocide,
they too, kill.

Without them the politician couldn't give
the command, the general couldn't tell
his soldiers to commit carnage

and the troops wouldn't obey.
Perhaps they who support and deny
are the worst of all of them.

THE POET AS A SCIENCE FICTION MONSTER

Writing poems is an attempt
to imprint part of oneself in
words and have them revive,
parasite-like, in other minds.

The poet becomes a monster
out of a science fiction movie,
waiting in each poem to unleash
themselves to unsuspecting victims.

Embedding itself in the host's
mind, it will change and shape,
and the victim's altered mind will
observe an altered world.

THE MOST EPHEMERAL THING OF ALL

This day too will be gone,
this buzzing of a few trapped
flies against the glass until
I open the window, the phone
call I had with an elderly
relative who called just to talk,
the cloudlands moored on the
pale bright blue sky, the slight
movement of the tree branches
in a wind you don't really feel,
the taste of this coffee will be
gone, this raw longing in my
loins, and these words I write
across a screen, and the fingers
moving across the keyboard,
and the mind which, ignoring all
its knowledge, can't quite accept
that it might be the most
ephemeral thing of these all.

and go sit outside and read
words that have not passed
through my own mind before.

THE LOSSES ITSELF HAVE BECOME PART OF US

1
The past an open wound bleeding
happiness over these latter, reduced
days, whose satisfaction comes from
ephemeral things, fluttering, flashing,
gone barely after the feeling fills us,
not the quiet permanence we lost.

2
To have had such things, such people,
and then to live on ruins of those days,
is to be a survivor of a deluvian world...
- what bombastic words, there are far
worse things, in this blighted world,
for other people, as our eyes confirm
every day. But the human mind is
a deeply selfish thing, it acknowledges
and feels empathy for others' towering
suffering, yet summits every day
the peaks of its own lesser losses.

3
Would it be better not to remember,
have scars cover and stop the bleeding,
get out of the net of remembering,
and build something modest of what
remains, live, and think oneself happy?
Surely it would be, some other people
that would be the healing medicine.
But as much as it wrecks these latter
days, how could we be ourselves
and not to remember and regret?

IT'S THE FAULT OF THE WATER

I'm counting over 110 killed today by Israel
in occupied Palestine's Gaza Strip, confirmed
deaths, from just following the news, not a total.
And many still reported to be under the rubble.

And Israel's apologists and its denier trolls are
doing their usual rounds, claiming both that you
can't trust the numbers and that it was the victims's
own fault, or Hamas'. But it's never Israel's.

When Israel bombs an entire residential square,
it's guilt evaporates with the victims' lives.
When Israeli quadcopter drone kills people
seeking water, it's the fault of the water.
