To Bede a pagan Anglo-Saxon
was better than a Christian Celt,
and his fellow Germanic people
have never seen any problem
with that. Religion can carry
you only so far, then tribal
feeling takes over, and makes
a monk praise a pagan king
for his slaughter of monks.
