When the news broke out
of the armistice in London
on November 11th 1918
strangers made love
with each other,
strangers brought up
in prim Victorian and Edwardian
days having sex
with strangers
because life had endured war,
there would be years and years
opening into the far distance of time,
no more bodies sinking
skulls grinning
into the mud of battlefields,
no more strangers
killing strangers.
