They are making maps of space on Earth and in the heavens
above and below, they are making maps of time, showing
the rise and fall of species and civilizations, the birth
and end of geological ages bookended by mass extinctions,
charts that record the changes wrought by humanity
pointing towards another bookend in the future, but knowing
this, feeling the fleeing time slipping from mortal hands
into records of the past, he would prefer surveying and mapping
her, recording not for eternity but for the moment,
and the memories that will go extinct with him.
