Fourteen degrees in the old thermometer
basking in the Sun when I went to drink
my coffee outside, and I took
a book of Chinese poems with me
to read, imagining a leisurely
half an hour or so sitting there in sunshine,
and ended up leaving the book
unopened, gulping down
my coffee in a biting wind
and quickly dragged my bones
inside, sat before the computer
to amplify what the world's powerful
and their criers don't want to be heard,
shouting into a mightier wind,
drinking more coffee
that tastes bitter as the sunshine
goes and trees now dark stand almost
unmoving under overcast clouds.
