Poems carved in cuneiform
on a clay tablet at Nippur
or into a shard of pottery
in hieratic at Thebes
will outlast all of our
poems on paper
and those cast in the digital realm,
where all indeed is written
not even on water, but on the foam
atop a bottomless abyss.
Long after these lines
are gone, when all
printed on paper now is gone,
let there be people
reading poems, let there
still be people living,
reading poems,
reading living poems
carved in cuneiform at Lagash
and in hieratic at Elephantine,
minds speaking to each other
over thousands upon thousands
of years, over us,
lost in between.
