We only believe that Tao Ch'ien
left his office and became
a farmer because he writes so
in his poems. Only that
and our need for it to be true,
that the poems reflect
a lived reality and not a dream,
dreamed by one who never left
the web of dust
and his solemn, quiet
life among the mountains
and the seasons
was only ever lived in words.
But tell me, what
is more likely?
