As long as I remember,
Israel and its supporters
have portrayed
the Zionist Apartheid State
both as a modern Sparta,
where every adult Jewish citizen
is a fearless, invincible warrior
always ready
to hear the call of war,
and as the sole, threatened
refuge of people
always afraid
of being swept to the sea,
terrified by a second,
looming Holocaust.
And these contradictions
the Israeli regime and its supporters
push to the world at the same time,
and the 'West' buys it,
this paradox of invincible Spartans
and terrified victims teetering
at the edge of a precipice,
and embraces them both,
holding them equally, at the same time,
cheering the atrocities
of the former
and excusing them with the latter,
every war crime,
every crime against humanity
celebrated as an inevitable victory,
defended as desperate 'self-defense'.
