Socrates had to die
so that he could be reborn
through Plato and Xenophon's
reed pens; such
a rebirth that we still
in vain seek the man
among the roles
he was made to play. Is
this a piece, a word
of the 'true' Socrates?
Surely the manner
he is made to speak
is his, if not the words?
So we wonder
after the hemlock-drinker,
seek him, that myth
that poison made -
Athens, Plato and
Xenophon's alike.
