What mercy is there in dying twice?
Facing death and its cold oblivion
a second time, with the fear deepened
by memory of the vast nothing
that was between the last heartbeat
and its thunderous renewal,
and made bitter by the knowledge
that no travelling prophet
with his gathered entourage
shall come to raise me a second time
to declare in flesh his mission from God!
