When we finally come
to understand another human
being, it tends to be too late;
that is the nature of our learning -
we spend our lives gathering
knowledge, and only in the dusk
we start comprehending
the strangers we mistook
as family and friends.

We understand the past,
we know what went wrong,
but so often today leads us astray,
until it, too is of the past,
and then, from a distance,
the whole scene emerges,
clear and devastating,
the scale of problems,
the scars running through,
which we never comprehended
from its midst.
