Stone is the memory of time
and yet like the passage of time
afflicts human mind's
own record of time,
so does time erode
Earth's rock-bound memory,
waters running deep in the Earth
eroding rock, forming caves,
erasing part of the memories
in stone, opening others
to the eyes of humans
to gaze upon deep time,
hundreds of millions of years
enfolding them
as they make
their own record
of the world below
for the coming years.
