THE TWIN HORNS OVER WISCONSIN

Gazing at the distant twin horns
peeking over the green forests
of the Wisconsin countryside
I wonder if those horns,
horns that could belong
to some gigantic, hidden beast
painted by Theodor Kittelsen,
are the spires of the Holy Hill
basilica?

Atop its hill
the grand design of the Bavarian monks
carries something
of those fairy tale castles
of the mad king
into another continent
and faith.

The monks that
chose exile on this
distant Turtle Island hill
would have been youths
when those castles
rose to wreck the Bavarian
economy, and being
men that cared little
for the material
and much for the spiritual
perhaps had gazed
at those castles
with some wonder
in their minds
and sympathy
for the king his dreams
had driven mad.
