Perhaps young Cyrus
just couldn't wait;
the old man had
literally lived
forever, for
that age.
Sixty-one years
before Cyrus rose in rebellion,
we find his grandfather Astyages
marrying off his daughter Amytis
(or so Berossus claims)
to his fellow crown price
Nebuchadnezzar
of Babylon.
Yet it still took
two years, or three,
of corpse-filled battlefields,
and a betrayal
for Cyrus to triumph,
for restless youth
to claim the diadem of rulership
from the near immortal
brows that had seen
Assyria fall.
Such was Astyages.
