Centaur and Nymph(1895)
by Franz von Stuck(1863-1928)
The huge centaur grins triumphantly
as he embraces or wrestles the blonde nymph.
Around them, keeping their distance,
other nymphs watch, point and laugh.
We can't see the blonde nymph's face,
turned away from us,
turned away from the looming centaur,
towards other nymphs
watching, pointing and laughing.
And that hidden face hides
the guidance of what we
should be feeling,
the artist leaving
it all to us,
Should we be revolted
or excited?
With symbolism
it's always the both.
