A CAT'S DIRGE ON AN AUTUMN MORNING

Sunny morning, warm, seven degrees,

and everyone else gone to school and work

I sit on the kitchen table drinking coffee,

no slow walks outdoors among falling leaves

to be taken with Neffi, no cat drama between

Jussi and Dora. But the two remaining cats

are here, and the older, having found after

Dora's passing that someone has to demand

food and that someone has to be her, opens

her mouth, a pitiful low lament, like a dirge

for the summer gone and the furry friends

that will no longer peek in from the kitchen

door, expectantly, wanting to go out, nor

have an epic standoff by the drawer.
