I don't understand how can you become dumb
to images and screams of death and suffering,
of broken bodies dead and alive, no matter
how often you see them.
There are people who claim that they become.
That supposedly at some point a child whose
intestines are pouring out of their belly
doesn't shock them anymore.
I think they just haven't seen enough, forced
to look long enough, to listen long enough
the cries of the mangled and the dying,
to recognize that death on a mass scale
is still individuals dying, each individual
suffering as much as their loved kin
on their deathbed, and often more.
If you won't lose your ability to feel
for the latter, how could you lose it
when faced by the former? Look long
at the faces of the murdered, look long
at the faces of the wounded -
look and see the faces of your loved
ones. your kin, feel their pain. Allow
your humanity to awaken, and feel
pain, sorror, anger and grief - and act.
