He cared about rocks,

not people,

the English-born author writes,

trying to explain why

Hutton didn't care

about the plight

of the oppressed people

of the Highlands.
 

He does write too

that as an England

 supporting Edinburgh man

 Hutton thought

that those who were

made to suffer

deserved their fate

for not obeying

the German kings of London.

The book in question is Stephen Baxter's(1957-) Revolutions in the Earth(2003) which was published in the United States as Ages in Chaos(2004).
