The duty of a historian

Rescue the forgotten dead from oblivion,

give them voice to speak

when their tongue has long decomposed;

unmount the powerful

who still, as revenants,

rule over the past in learned pages.

This is the duty of a historian:

To raise up those

who were kept low,

and to bring down those

who too long have obscured our view

when taken for giants.
