EARLY CLASSIC STATUE OF POSEIDON
The Artemision Bronze, recovered in 1928 from middle 2nd century BCE shipwreck.
A bronze Poseidon, blinded
by the two millennia on the seabed,
still poised to throw his long-lost
trident at us, mortals,
ever the target of wrath of the gods.
Lord of the sea claimed
by the sea, and
then given back to another kind blue,
the world of air
where no longer his brother Zeus
rules with envy and
his thunderbolts ready. Still,
the blind god stands
magnificent, facing
the stares of mortals
as he faced the long centuries
in his watery realm.
