DEATH POEMS

I picked up a poem of

Japanese death poems,

and surely that was a

book meant to kill

anyone who chose

to open and read it;

for it was ninety pages

of introduction, a scholarly

essay of great erudition,

before I finally got to

the first poem, and by

then was ready to perish.
