NATHANIEL, AGE FIFTEEN, ALREADY HAVING DROWNED ON THE CARIBBEAN IN 1780

When captain James Cook the Younger of the Royal Navy
drowned in the cold Atlantic waters, on the evening of
January 25th 1794, the waves of the ocean leaving his
body laying on the shore of the island of Wight, the
ocean refusing to entomb him in its sediments,
it was said that he had been 'melancholy',
although it seems few if any connected
this to the death of his only surviving
sibling, Hugh, aged seventeen,
 from scarlet fever the month
before in Cambridge.
