René of Anjoy, duke of Anjou and Bar, count of Provence,
duke of Lorraine through his first marriage, and pretender
to the thrones of Aragon and Naples, was long supposed to
have been an artist, the creator of some surviving paintings,
miniatures and poems. This claim is now dismissed.
How could they have thought,
having seen his face in paintings,
that a man that ugly could have ever
painted a beautiful altarpiece or
written a poem to last centuries?
