THE LAND DREAMS

The winter threw a blanket over the land,
a heavy white one, yet the land shivers
under it as it sleeps, cold dreams rising
from the memories in its rocks, its soil,
of great sheets of ice, a heavier blanket,
pressing it down for a hundred thousand
years of cold winter without a spring.

Until the snow first melts and flows
in singing rivulets across its surface,
the land will not dream of spring,
but shivers in its sleep, feeling
the weight of the great ice.
