The world on the first day of the year
is an ukiyo-e painting, all white snow,
black trunks and foliage of evergreens,
and above the gray sky of clouds. Just
three colours capturing the essence
of the landscape, and one dark figure
moving across it, the beginning and
end of their journey hidden from us.
