A poet, by the nature
of their work, is no more lonely
than a carpenter, cobbler,
or a nurse or a clerk.
Words are no different
from uncarved wood,
from leather to be
given the shape of a shoe.
A poet just has a tendency,
unlike the carpenter,
cobbler, nurse and clerk,
to see themselves
not as one among
the multitude, a poet,
but as the poet,
the ur-poet.
Words are no different
from uncarved wood,
from leather to be
given the shape of a shoe.
