We can appreciate Degas' art
without appreciating Degas;
and moreso, we must.
It's a moral imperative.
Great art can, when the artist
hides their inner ugliness,
escape the mental constraints
of their creator.
That is Degas' art as its best,
when Degas the artist
keeps Degas the misogynist racist
outside the canvas.
But when a mentally
corrupted artist like Degas
allows their inner uglinesss
to manifest on the canvas...
What we have then is not great art,
merely historical evidence
of culturally and socially
manufactured bias.
