ONLY NOW

Only now wandering

these deserted streets,

treading gravel and cement

past quiet houses,

with our few

ghost-like fellow travelers

keeping their distance

and their silence,

do we start

slowly to see,

beyond the withering

shock and enduring fear,

the truth

that we have always

been locked in purgatory on Earth.
