Did his equally learned friends,
in high places themselves
as court officials, leading
bureaucrats, officers and abbots,
ever react to Wang Wei's claims,
in his finely wrought poems,
of being a poor hermit, living
in his hut, one with the nature,
with the same exasperation
as I, or at least sighed and
smiled tolerantly; or
were they all in it, in this
game of pretending to be poor
and living in the countryside
with the work of your own hands,
like the king and queen in
later Versailles, facing
its own coming cataclysm?
