This morning, just before dawn, I
fell asleep reading Chinese poems
ten centuries old; now I sit drinking
coffee on the porch reading
Akkadian poetry fourty-four
centuries old. And what unites
them is that neither of them
is 'old'; they speak, I listen,
they become part of me.
