NOMARCHS OF THE NILE

In the Middle Kingdom, nomarchs
built their tombs on the banks of the Nile,
great causeways with statues
leading from the river to their
opulently decorated resting places.

This was a sign of confidence,
that everyone knew where they laid,
and that they could rest in peace.

In the New Kingdom, great
warrior kings hid their tombs
deep underground, in dry valleys
away from the flow of the Nile.

Something had broken,
confidence shattered.

And those tombs, except
one of a king who died young,
were penetrated and their riches
pilfered, mummies hidden
in caches by priests of
lesser dynasties.

Yet the nomarchs of
the Middle Kingdom, buried
in shafts under the tomb floors,
often laid undisturbed until
the egyptologists came to
gaze at their death masks.
