Scientists studying deep pink grains of garnet
sand on the beaches of southern Australia
discovered evidence of ancient mountain
range formation event in Antarctica
590 million years ago which created
them. Erosion grinding the grains from
the mountains, ice sheets carried them
north to Australia before the continents'
separation, leaving them into glacial
deposits for half a billion years; and now
being eroded, swept on the beach by
the southern Pacific Ocean, separating
the deposits from what remains
of the mountains under an ice sheet.
