LANGUAGE HAS MADE US

Language has made us what we are,
it gave us our long climb to art and technology
from egg shell decoration and geometric
patterns on stone, it took the mere
crude thrusting spear and gave us the atlatl and the bow,
the plough and the sacrificial pit of Ur,
language gave us science, artillery and mushroom cloud
over Nagasaki, probes cast beyond the heliosphere.
It gaves us petty tribal conspiracies
in the Mesolithic, it gave us the War of Roses
with chopped heads and missing princes,
our grand genocides of these hundred years,
from Armenia to Cambodia and Palestine,
from East Timor to Rwanda and West Papua,
It made us lie, it made us weave webs of deceits,
cast us from mere petty fighting of the primates
to here, where arming endless carnage
is told to be a job-creating scheme
that will boost the economy; where
fascist racists want to recreate past horrors
in a new guise, and 'the moderates'
tell us we must let them hate, blind the electorate
and form governments. Only
language, supposedly, used in argumentation
can save us. I would say a stone axe
has a better chance.
