FLANDERS

Should we mourn long-dead men

made into minced meat

and buried in mud -

wear poppies,

visit the battlefields

to see plowed fields and

copses in green and meadows

with flowers blooming? For

nature doesn't care

from where its ebullient life

sprouts each spring anew;

nature buries and builds.
