Better groom than Jesus
would've been for you that James,
painter of art fit for kitchen plates,
for he was not half-bad looking,
and at night even a modest
body warms a troubled spirit
better than a prayer-book.
Dark, tall strangers, heavenly
princes long dead on crosses,
lords of manors with mad wifes
locked up in the attic, all those
phantom men of dreams,
little good are they when
the spirit burns for flesh.
