On Sinai, so the Quran says,
Moses asked God to appear
to him in all its glory.
Perhaps God remembered
how it went with Semele
when it had the name of Zeus,
and so it told Moses to
watch a mountain instead and
God would show itself to that,
in all its divine glory. So
Moses watched, the mountain
turned to dust, Moses
rejoiced, history took its course,
and now we turn mountains
and Gods alike to dust.
