Long after their marriage was over,
and after they both were dead,
my great-aunt was still amazed that
my grandfather had never beaten
my grandmother, her sister. All his
infidelities forgotten beside that
fact, which my great-aunt still
struggled to comprehend,
herself married to a man who
had killed her beloved dog.
