People become seduced by their illnesses,
they rebuild identities with them, amputating
healthy parts of themselves to make prostheses
out of diagnoses as replacements, reshaping
themselves reading about symptoms to adopt,
seeking out as role models those self-destructing
as a sacrifice to their own illnesses. We must
see only loss in these lives given up willingly.
