Why did Enheduanna declare herself
the first (known) author in world history?
Could we assume that behind this
was the understanding that authorship
in itself is power? Kings were leaving
their names on their monuments,
so perhaps she achieved a mental leap
that authorship could be affixed
on written creations on clay tablets
as much as names of kings to clay bricks,
yet not being tied to those clay tablets,
just carried on by them, poems
themselves imprinted by her name,
granting power in her lifetime
and beyond, reverberating across time
like a monument of a king
yet more lasting.
