One man’s need is another man’s frivolous want,
she wrote and although it seemed obvious
to him that his need was "the real thing", how
can one, objectively, separate the merely
frivolous from a need that is true? Subjectively,
he knew it wasn't frivolous, but trying to look at
it from a neutral point of view... Even with those
piles of words he had wrought, how could
anyone else be able to say for sure that his
was a true need, perhaps (or not) deserving
some positive response, and not a mere
frivolous want to be dealt as such? Even
if something is powerfully felt on the surface
doesn't mean that it can't be a shallow thing,
lacking true depth. He believed otherwise
about his announced need, but her words
carried a firm question in them, and he
could only give that old answer of men,
so easily given by many, "Trust me."
