THERE'S ALWAYS DISTANCE SEPARATING US FROM WHAT WE LONG FOR

What can't be gained drives human beings.
You can be Neil Armstrong and walk on the Moon
and the lunar dust flows through the fingers
of your glove, you can be Sylvia Earle and walk
on the ocean floor and the sediment billows
around you, flows through your claw, but you
can never touch the regolith of a billion years
with your bare hand, you can never touch
the sediment of a million years with your bare
palm. Even in the triumph there is a separation
that keeps the human being at a distance, in
their tight cocoon of a shell separating them
from the universe around their flesh.
