JUST LIKE THAT

I slept almost twenty-two hours yesterday,
I who used to sleep five to six hours a day
in my youth and considered extraordinary
the seventeen hours I once slept as a teenager.
And now I let twenty-two hours slip between
my fingers, like that, an entire day of the fading
summer gone, and I awakened in darkness
after having put aside a book in darkness
and closed my eyes. I think what I could
have done in sixteen or seventeen hours
awake, and can think a little more than
a small pile of books read through,
fed through my mind, turned into
something that I half falsely
would call my own.
